Downsizing Guide for Seniors
Downsizing before a move can be one of the most difficult parts of the process. Whether you’re moving from a house to a smaller home or from an apartment to a senior living facility, we’re here to help every step of the way. With House to Home move managers, downsizing doesn’t have to be scary! We help you with decluttering, packing and organizing before your move, as well as with coordinating movers for the big day and unpacking in your new home. If you’re nervous about downsizing, here are a few tips to help you identify what’s important to you and get organized before your move.
Tip 1: One Room at a Time
The best way to begin downsizing is to focus on one room at a time. Ask yourself, “where do I enjoy spending my time when I’m home?” If you love cooking for family and friends, prioritize keeping your favorite items for cooking. If you love reading in a particular chair, make space in your new home for your chair and a few favorite books.
Tip 2: One Day at a Time
Don’t try to downsize in a day! It’s not impossible, but is the stress worth it? Downsizing takes time because it can be difficult to part with sentimental items, and you want to make sure you don’t misplace valuable belongings in the busyness of a move. If you do have limited time to downsize, we can reduce your stress by helping with packing, coordinating movers, unpacking, and organizing your new space. At House to Home, we help our clients identify what’s most important to them, so they can live comfortably and make their new house a home.
Tip 3: Make a List, Check it Twice
Our last tip for downsizing is supposed to remind you of the holidays… because downsizing can be a gift! When you make a list of the items you most want to keep with you during your move, you’re reminded of memories and people that make life special. List the most important items you want to bring into your new space, then take a second look at each item on the list and thank it for making the journey with you. It may sound funny, but gratitude helps with stress regulation. By saying “thank you” for the things in your home you’re most grateful for, you can reduce your stress and be more prepared for your move all at once!
Breaking your move into smaller parts - one room and one day at a time - helps you organize your belongings and your thoughts about downsizing. Finally, listing the items you enjoy most helps you feel less stressed (and more grateful!) about moving.
